The Chaconne is for two string quintets, or for double string orchestra. I chose the chaconne form because string players are familiar with Bach’s Chaconne for solo violin. It is highly structured, in 21 cycles of 8 bars (refer to the diagram below). 21 is a Fibonacci number in the sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21..., where each number in the series is the sum of the two previous numbers. The relative proportions of any two consecutive numbers in the sequence approximate the golden ratio.
